Does 14k gold tarnish? Yes, slowly, and it is not the gold that darkens

Solid 14k gold does tarnish, but slowly and only on the surface. Pure gold does not react with air, sweat or water at all; the 41.5% of the alloy that is copper, silver and zinc does, and over months it builds a faint brown or grey film that a bowl of warm soapy water takes off in ten minutes. A 14k piece worn daily usually never looks tarnished, because skin and clothing polish it as fast as the film forms. A piece left in a drawer next to rubber bands or wool can dull in a season. Chlorine is the exception: it does not tarnish gold, it attacks the alloy inside the metal and can crack prongs, so the pool is the one place to take 14k off.

What actually darkens in 14k

Karat is a recipe. 14k means 14 parts gold in 24, or 58.5% by weight; the rest is copper for strength and color, silver for softness and paleness, a little zinc as a deoxidizer, and in white gold nickel or palladium. Gold sits at the bottom of the reactivity scale and forms no oxide or sulfide at room temperature. Copper does: with oxygen and moisture it forms a red-brown oxide, and with the traces of sulfur in air, rubber, wool and eggs it forms black copper sulfide. Silver forms silver sulfide, the same black coating as tarnished cutlery. Tarnish on a 14k ring is those two compounds on the copper and silver atoms that happen to sit at the surface, a layer a few atoms thick, which is why it wipes off.

Rust is different and does not apply: rust is iron oxide, and there is no iron in karat gold. If a "gold" piece shows orange rust spots, the base under the plating is steel.

How fast it happens

There is no fixed number, because the speed depends on what touches the metal, but the ranges are consistent enough to plan around. Worn every day, a 14k yellow chain or ring rarely develops visible tarnish at all; the friction of skin and clothes removes the film continuously, and a monthly wash keeps the low spots clean. Worn occasionally and stored in a closed box, the same piece shows a slight loss of brightness in six to twelve months. Stored touching rubber, in a leather pouch or in a humid bathroom, the dulling can appear within a few weeks, because rubber and leather release sulfur compounds and humidity supplies the moisture the reaction needs.

By karat the order is simple: the less gold, the more surface that can react. 10k (41.7% gold) tarnishes noticeably faster than 14k, 18k (75%) slower and only under provocation, 22k and 24k effectively never. Color matters too: rose gold is 14k with more copper and less silver in its 41.5%, so it darkens a little faster and browner; white gold alloyed with nickel tarnishes very little but is usually rhodium plated, and what people see wearing off white gold is the rhodium, not tarnish.

What speeds it up

Sulfur

The single biggest accelerator. Rubber bands, latex, wool, felt-lined boxes with cheap adhesive, eggs, onions, hot springs and polluted city air all release hydrogen sulfide. A gold ring stored in a rubber-lined tray can darken faster in a month than in a year on a hand.

Sweat and skin chemistry

Sweat is slightly acidic and carries salt; both help copper corrode. People whose sweat is more acidic, or who take certain medications, see darkening and the green mark described on the skin discoloration page sooner. It is the wearer, not the gold, and it is harmless.

Cosmetics and cleaners

Lotions, perfume, hairspray and sunscreen leave a film that traps moisture against the metal and often contains compounds that react with copper. Bleach and chlorine cleaners go further, see below. Put jewelry on last, after everything has dried.

Humidity and heat

Bathrooms are the worst place to store gold: steam, temperature swings and the sulfur in some soaps. A bedroom drawer with the pouch closed is the best.

Chlorine is not tarnish, it is worse

Tarnish is a cosmetic film. Chlorine, and the other halogens iodine, fluorine and bromine, do something else: in the presence of stress they attack the alloy along the grain boundaries inside the metal, a failure jewelers call stress corrosion cracking. It needs two things at once, residual stress in the metal, which prong tips and thin shanks always have, and a corrosive environment, which pool water, hot tubs and household bleach supply. The cracks are not visible until a prong snaps or a shank splits, and the piece may look perfectly bright the day before. Lower karats and nickel white gold are the most susceptible. This is the reason to take 14k off before a pool or a hot tub even though a shower is fine; the water page goes through each situation.

Is it tarnish, or something else

Three things get mistaken for tarnish.

  1. Dirt. Soap scum, skin oil and lotion form a grey film that looks like darkening and comes off with warm water and a drop of dish soap; if that fixes it, nothing reacted.
  2. Worn plating. If a piece is turning a different color in patches, brassy at the edges or pink where it rubs, the gold was a layer over another metal and the layer is gone; solid 14k is the same color all the way through and cannot do this.
  3. Rhodium wear on white gold. The piece turns faintly warm or yellowish where it rubs, which is the natural color of the white gold alloy showing through, cured by re-plating for a small fee.

A quick test: rub the dark area with a jeweler's polishing cloth. Tarnish comes off and the metal underneath matches the rest of the piece. Worn plating does not come off and the underlying metal is a different color. If in doubt, the tests for real gold settle whether the piece is solid at all.

Removing it

For plain 14k with diamonds or no stones: warm water, a few drops of dish soap, ten minutes of soaking, a soft toothbrush along the links or under the setting, rinse, pat dry, and finish with a polishing cloth. That removes the film completely because the film is only a few atoms thick. Skip toothpaste and baking soda pastes on anything you care about: they are abrasives and leave fine scratches that dull the surface faster than tarnish did. Skip vinegar and lemon on pieces with pearls, opals, emeralds or turquoise, and keep those out of ultrasonic cleaners as well. Preventing it

  • Wear it: daily wear is the best anti-tarnish treatment there is.
  • Store it dry, in a closed pouch or a lined box in a bedroom, never in the bathroom and never touching rubber.
  • Keep pieces apart so 14k does not rub against harder metals.
  • Put jewelry on after lotion and perfume have dried, take it off before pools, hot tubs and cleaning with bleach.
  • Wipe with a soft cloth after sweaty days.

Questions people ask

Does 14k gold tarnish in the shower?

Not from the water. Tap water and shampoo do nothing to 14k; what a shower leaves is soap film and hard-water spots that look dull and rinse off. The risk in a bathroom is storage, not showering: steam and the sulfur in some soaps darken a piece left on the sink faster than wearing it ever would.

Does 14k gold tarnish in a pool or the ocean?

Salt water does not tarnish gold, though it dulls it with residue and makes rings slip off cold fingers. Chlorinated water is a different problem: it does not darken the surface, it attacks the alloy inside under stress and can crack prongs and thin shanks weeks later. Rinse after the ocean; take 14k off for pools and hot tubs.

Does 14k gold tarnish more than 18k?

Yes. 14k has 41.5% reactive alloy against 25% in 18k, so it darkens sooner in bad storage and shows more of the copper-brown tone. Worn daily, both usually stay bright. 10k, with 58.3% alloy, is where tarnish becomes a regular chore.

Does rose gold tarnish faster than yellow gold?

A little. Rose gold gets its color from more copper in the same 41.5% of alloy, and copper is the metal that forms the brown oxide. The change is often welcomed as patina and comes off with the same soapy water when it is not.

What does tarnished 14k gold look like?

A faint loss of brightness first, then a brownish or greyish tone in recesses and on the back of a pendant where skin does not polish it. It never flakes, never turns green itself and never shows a different metal underneath. Patches of pink, silver or brass mean plating wearing through, which is not tarnish.
