Why solid gold is fine in a shower

Gold does not react with water, soap, shampoo or the chlorine in tap water, which is a hundred times weaker than a pool. The alloy metals in 14k, copper and silver mostly, react very slowly with moisture and sulfur, which is tarnish, and a shower does not give them enough of either to matter. What a shower does leave is a film: soap scum, conditioner and hard-water minerals settle into links and behind stones and make the piece look dull. That is dirt, not damage, and a soak in warm soapy water removes it. If you shower in a chain every day, wash it every few weeks and it will look new for decades.
Rings need one extra thought: soap makes fingers slippery, and cold water shrinks them. More gold goes down drains than is ever damaged by them.
Why chlorine is a different problem
Pool and hot tub water carries chlorine at levels far above tap water. Chlorine does not tarnish gold; it attacks the alloy metals at the grain boundaries inside the metal, and where the metal is under tension the attack runs along those boundaries as microscopic cracks. Jewelers call it stress corrosion cracking, and the industry literature is blunt about the two ingredients: residual stress in the metal, which prong tips, tension settings and thin shanks always carry, and a halogen environment, which chlorine, bromine and iodine provide. Remove either and nothing happens; supply both and a prong can snap with no warning, often weeks after the exposure, with the piece looking bright the whole time.
Susceptibility runs with alloy content and alloy type. 10k has the most reactive metal and fails first; 14k is the everyday case; 18k is more resistant but not immune. Nickel white gold is the worst of the common alloys because nickel does not dissolve into gold evenly and leaves nickel-rich boundaries that are brittle to begin with; palladium white gold is far better. Hot tubs are worse than pools because heat speeds the chemistry, the bromine used in many tubs is a halogen too, and hands swell in hot water and put more tension on rings.
Household bleach is the same chemistry in a stronger dose. Take rings off to clean the bathroom.
Salt water, sand and sunscreen
Sea water does not corrode gold alloys the way chlorine does; the salt is sodium chloride, but the free chlorine that matters is not present in meaningful amounts. The ocean's risks are mechanical and human: sand is quartz, harder than gold and much harder than rhodium plating, and a day on the beach can put fine scratches on a polished ring or wear the white finish off white gold; cold water shrinks fingers by half a size and rings slide off unnoticed; sunscreen and salt dry into a film that dulls everything. Rinse in fresh water after swimming and dry before storing. Lakes and rivers are the same case without the salt.
Gold filled, vermeil and plated: the layer is the limit
These are not solid gold and the water question is really a wear question.

Stones change the answer
Diamonds, sapphires and rubies take showers and sea water without harm; they collect soap film like everything else and dull until cleaned. Everything softer or porous does not.

The rule is simple: if the piece has anything other than diamond, sapphire or ruby on a solid gold mount, it comes off before the water.
What to do after each situation
After a shower
Nothing daily. Every few weeks, ten minutes in warm water with dish soap, a soft brush along the links, rinse, dry.
After a pool or hot tub
Rinse in fresh water immediately. If it was a prong-set ring or thin band and the swims are regular, have a jeweler check the prongs under magnification once a year; cracks from chlorine are not visible to the eye until the prong goes.
After the ocean
Rinse to remove salt and sand, check rhodium-plated white gold for a warm tone at the high points, which means the plating has worn and can be redone for a small fee.
After the gym
Wipe with a soft cloth. Sweat is mildly acidic and carries salt; on solid gold it only speeds tarnish, on plated pieces it is the main thing that wears them out.
Questions people ask
Can you shower with 14k gold every day?
Yes. Water, soap and shampoo do not react with a 14k alloy; the only effect is a film of soap and hard-water minerals that dulls the surface and rinses off. Wash the piece in warm soapy water every few weeks. The bathroom risk is leaving jewelry on the sink, where steam and sulfur in soaps tarnish it faster than wearing it.
Can you swim in a pool with a gold chain?
Occasionally, with a fresh-water rinse afterward. A plain chain carries little internal stress, so chlorine has less to work on than in a prong-set ring. Daily swimming is a different matter: chlorine attacks the alloy along grain boundaries over time, and 10k and nickel white gold fail first. Is a hot tub worse than a pool for gold?
