Gold itself never turns skin green. The green comes from copper in the alloy, or in the brass under worn plating, reacting with salt and acids in sweat, lotion and soap to make copper salts. The dark smudge that some people get is different: it is metal worn off the ring by abrasive cosmetics, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in sunscreen and foundation. Solid 14k and 18k rarely mark skin and never rust, tarnish through, or fade; plated pieces do all three once the film wears.

Every karat below 24 is a mixture, and what is not gold is mostly copper and silver, with zinc in yellow alloys and nickel or palladium in white. Copper reacts with chloride and the fatty acids in sweat to form green salts; silver reacts with sulfur from eggs, onions, wool and some skin to form black silver sulfide. Neither reaction happens to the gold, which is why a 14k ring can leave a mark and still be exactly what the stamp says. The more alloy, the more there is to react, so 10k marks more people than 14k and 18k rarely marks anyone; body chemistry does the rest, which is why one person's ring is fine for years and then is not after a change in medication, diet or hand cream.

Does 14k gold fade, rust or change color?
Fade
No. The color of a gold alloy is the color of the metal all the way through, so there is nothing to fade; a 14k ring worn for fifty years is the same yellow it was, only scratched. What people call fading is either a film of soap and skin oil, which washes off, or plating wearing through to a paler base metal, which is not fading but disappearing.
Rust
No. Rust is iron oxide, and there is no iron in gold alloy. A gold-colored piece that shows orange-brown spots is steel or iron under plating, and the spots are the base metal rusting through pin holes in the film.
Change color
Slightly, at the surface, in some chemistries. Silver in the alloy can darken from sulfur, copper can redden or dull, and both come off with a wash. Rose gold can develop a slightly deeper tone over years as the copper at the surface oxidizes; some owners like the patina and some polish it away. White gold changes color the most visibly, because its rhodium plating wears and the warmer alloy shows, which is a coating question, not a gold question.
The black smudge
A dark grey or black streak on the finger under a ring, especially in summer and especially with sunscreen, is usually not tarnish at all. Powdered minerals in cosmetics (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, talc, iron oxides) are harder than gold alloy; trapped between skin and ring they act as a polishing compound and grind off microscopic gold and copper particles, which look black in fine powder. Washing the hand and the ring removes it. Stopping it means putting rings on after sunscreen and lotion have dried, or wearing them less on beach days. Higher karat is softer and smudges more this way, the reverse of the green problem.
Water: showers, pools, hot tubs, ocean
Showers
Solid gold of any karat can be showered in daily. What builds up is soap and shampoo film, which dulls the shine and collects in settings; a rinse and an occasional wash with dish soap fixes it. Plated pieces should come off, because the towel afterward does more damage than a week of dry wear.
Pools and hot tubs
The exception for solid gold. Chlorine attacks the copper and silver in the alloy and, over many hours, can make some 10k and 14k pieces brittle at solder joints and darken them; nickel white gold is the most sensitive, and hot tubs are worse than pools because heat speeds every reaction. Take gold off for both, or rinse it in fresh water afterward and do not leave it wet.
Ocean
Salt water does not hurt gold at all; it takes it, because fingers shrink in cold water and rings slide off, and clasps open in surf. Rinse afterward to clear the salt from settings and clasps. Never swim in plated pieces; salt gets under the film.
Sweat, lotion, perfume, sunscreen
Sweat
Salt and acid, so gym jewelry marks skin more and needs washing more, but it does no lasting harm to solid gold. It is the main driver of green marks on 10k and 14k in summer.
Hand lotion and cream
Traps sweat against the ring and often contains salts and acids of its own; it is the usual reason a ring that was fine for years starts marking. Apply lotion, let it dry, then put rings on.
Perfume and hairspray
Alcohol and propellants dull the surface of any metal and are the enemy of plating; on solid gold they leave a film that washes off. Spray first, dress in jewelry last.
Sunscreen and foundation
The abrasive minerals behind the black smudge. Harmless to the metal except for the microscopic wear, but the smudge is why beach days end with grey fingers.
Yellow, white and rose 14k age differently
- Yellow 14k is the baseline: it can mark some skins, it does not fade, and it washes clean.
- Rose 14k has more copper, so it marks a little more readily on acidic skin and can deepen in tone with age; it is also the hardest of the three and scratches least.
- White 14k is the odd one out: its bright finish is rhodium plating over a greyish alloy, and when the rhodium wears, usually at the palm side within one to three years, the alloy underneath, often nickel with copper and zinc, is the one most likely to mark skin and to itch. Re-plating restores it; palladium white gold avoids the nickel.
Prevention, in order of effect
- Buy solid over plated: this removes most of the problem by itself.
- Choose a higher karat or a rhodium-plated white gold if your skin reacts to copper.
- Put rings on last, after lotion, sunscreen and perfume have dried.
- Take rings off for pools, hot tubs, heavy sweat and cleaning with bleach.
- Wash rings weekly in warm soapy water and dry them.
The clear nail polish trick that circulates online works for a few days and then peels into a film that traps sweat; it is not a fix.
Cleaning and storage
Warm water, a drop of dish soap, ten minutes of soaking and a soft toothbrush clean solid gold chains and rings, including in the links. Rinse in a bowl, not over an open drain.
- Toothpaste and baking soda are abrasive and dull polished gold.
- Bleach and chlorine cleaners attack the alloy.
- A home ultrasonic cleaner is safe for plain solid gold and diamonds, and unsafe for pearls, opals, emeralds, glued stones, hollow chains and anything plated.
Store pieces separately so they do not scratch each other, dry, and away from rubber bands and wool, which release sulfur that darkens silver-rich alloys.
Questions people ask
Does 14k gold tarnish?
Not the way silver or brass do. It does not rust, corrode through or fade, and its color is permanent. It can pick up a dull grey film from soap, skin oils and sulfur in the air, and in some people's chemistry a faint darkening from the silver and copper in the alloy; both wash off with dish soap. A "14k" piece that darkens deeply and stays dark is plated.
Can you shower with 14k gold jewelry?
Every day, yes. Solid 14k is untouched by water and soap, and the film that builds up rinses off. Two exceptions: take rings off for pools and hot tubs, where chlorine works on the copper and silver in the alloy over time, and take off anything plated or vermeil, which a towel strips faster than a week of wear.
Can you swim with a gold necklace?
In the ocean the metal is fine and the risk is the necklace itself: clasps open, chains slip over a head, cold water shrinks fingers under rings. In a chlorinated pool solid gold survives a swim, but repeated exposure weakens 10k and 14k solder joints and dulls white gold; rinse in fresh water afterward or leave it in the locker. Never swim in plated pieces.
Why does my finger turn green from real gold?
The copper in the alloy, not the gold, is reacting with your sweat, lotion or soap and leaving copper salts on the skin. It happens more with 10k and 14k, more in summer and at the gym, more with hand cream, and more for people whose sweat runs acidic; a new medication or diet can switch it on after years without it. The mark is harmless and washes off. A higher karat or a rhodium-plated white gold ring stops it; a plated ring makes it far worse.
Are nickel-free earrings good for sensitive ears?
Yes, because nickel, not gold, is the usual cause of itching, redness and weeping lobes. Roughly one adult in ten reacts to nickel, and cheap plated posts release it as the plating wears. Solid 14k or 18k yellow gold, palladium white gold, implant-grade titanium and steel labeled nickel-free are the safe posts; nickel white gold and mystery-metal fashion earrings are the usual problem.
How do you clean a gold chain at home?
Ten minutes in warm water with a drop of dish soap, a soft toothbrush through the links, a rinse in a bowl rather than over an open drain, and a dry cloth. That removes soap film, skin oil and most darkening. Skip toothpaste and baking soda, which are abrasive and dull the polish, and skip a home ultrasonic if the chain is hollow, plated or set with soft stones.
Is an ultrasonic cleaner safe for gold jewelry?
For plain solid gold and diamonds, yes, and it reaches where a brush cannot. Not for pearls, opals, emeralds, turquoise, coral or anything glued, which crack or loosen; not for hollow chains, which trap water and detergent; not for plated pieces, which lose their film. When in doubt, the dish-soap soak does the same job more slowly.
