For daily wear and for pendants, Cuban and Franco are the strongest solid gold chains, then wheat and box. Rope is strong at 3 mm and up and fragile below. Snake, herringbone and fine figaro kink and are the ones that come back to jewelers. Two numbers matter more than the style name: whether the chain is solid or hollow, and how many grams it carries per inch, because at the same 4 mm a Cuban holds 1.29 grams per inch and a figaro about 0.66. Most chains do not snap in the middle; they open at the clasp or the jump ring, so a lobster clasp on a soldered ring is worth more than another millimeter of width. For a pendant, pick a chain at least as heavy as the pendant once the pendant passes about 10 grams, and a style that stays still: box, Franco or wheat.

Strength is geometry first

A chain fails in one of three ways. A link opens at its solder joint under a straight pull, which is rare on solid chains and common on hollow ones. A link bends out of plane and stays bent, a kink, which happens to any style whose links hang free and cannot rotate. Or the clasp or the jump ring next to it lets go, which is the usual failure and has nothing to do with the style. So "strongest" means: links that share load instead of concentrating it, links that turn under a snag instead of bending, and enough metal in each link to survive both.

The two styles at the bottom look the most solid on a display and are the ones jewelers see most, because a flat plate cannot bend and recover. The two at the top are not stronger because they are heavier; they are stronger because a snag rotates the link instead of bending it, and because every link is soldered shut. Same width, different chain
Width is the number sellers print and the least useful one. At the same 4 mm a Cuban link is a thick oval of wire lying flat, a rope is air between twisted strands, and a figaro is mostly its long thin links. The gold per inch, which is what actually resists a pull, differs by more than half across styles, and a chain listed by width and length without a weight in grams is hiding the number that matters. The chain weight calculator gives the expected weight for any style, width and length, so a listing can be checked in seconds: a 20 inch 4 mm Cuban should weigh about 25.7 g, a 4 mm rope about 20.8 g. Anything far under those figures is hollow or thinner than stated.

A hollow chain is made from gold strip formed into a tube around a base metal core, drawn down, soldered link by link, then the core is dissolved out. Trade literature gives wall thicknesses of a few hundredths of a millimeter on finished tube, which is why a hollow chain of the same look weighs a third to a half of a solid one and why it dents when pressed with a fingernail. The solder joints on tube that thin are the critical point: anything short of a perfect joint is a link that will open, and a dented or kinked hollow link cannot be straightened or re-soldered in practice.
Semi-hollow chains, made from heavier tube, are a reasonable way to get a 6 mm look at a 14k price and survive daily wear if they are not slept in. Fully hollow chains are a look, not a chain, and should be priced as such. The clasp is the weakest link
Most "my chain broke" stories end at the clasp, because it is the smallest, thinnest, most-moved metal on the piece. A spring ring is a coiled wire spring inside a thin tube; it wears, the spring weakens, and the ring opens under a pull. A lobster clasp is a solid stamped body with a spring-loaded arm and is the right clasp for anything worth insuring. A box clasp with a safety catch is what heavy Cubans use. Just as important is the jump ring the clasp hangs from: on cheap chains it is a cut ring closed by pressure, and it opens under exactly the pull it should resist. Ask for a soldered jump ring, or have a jeweler solder it for a few dollars; it is the cheapest strength upgrade there is.
Match the clasp to the chain. A 3 mm rope on a 6 mm spring ring will lose the rope, not the ring. The clasp should look proportionate to the chain, the arm should snap shut without side play, and the tongue of a box clasp should click audibly.
Matching a chain to a pendant
A pendant does three things to a chain: it adds constant load, it concentrates wear at the two links that carry the bail, and it turns a chain that twists into one whose clasp migrates to the front. The rules that follow from that are short.

- Once a pendant passes about 10 grams, choose a chain at least as heavy as the pendant, so the pendant cannot lever the bail links open.
- The bail opening should clear the chain by at least half a millimeter, or the bail wears a groove in the links.
- Box, Franco and wheat hold a pendant centered with the clasp at the back; rope and cable let it slide and rotate.

What does not kink
A kink is a link bent out of its plane, and it happens to styles whose links can swing freely and hang in a loop: rope under 3 mm, snake, herringbone, omega, fine figaro. It does not happen to styles hinged in one or two planes: box, Franco, Cuban, wheat. Kinks form in storage more than in wear, when a loose chain in a drawer folds over itself, and untangling a knotted fine rope is how most of them are made. If the piece is rope or snake, fasten the clasp and hang it or thread it through a straw; the storage page has the routine. A kinked snake or herringbone is usually not repairable; a kinked rope over 3 mm sometimes is.

What is the strongest type of gold chain for a pendant?
Franco or Cuban in solid gold, with wheat and box next. They are strongest because every link is soldered and locked by its neighbors, so a snag turns a link instead of bending it, and they hold the pendant still with the clasp at the back. For a pendant over about 10 grams, the chain should weigh at least as much as the pendant.
Are rope chains strong?
At 3 mm and above, yes: the twisted strands share load well and a solid rope carries a heavy pendant. Under 3 mm, and in any hollow version, rope is the style jewelers repair most, because a fine strand kinks under a snag and a kinked rope usually cannot be straightened. Buy rope solid, 3 mm or more, and store it fastened.
Is a Cuban link stronger than a rope chain?
At the same width, yes. A 4 mm Cuban carries about 1.29 grams of gold per inch against about 1.04 for a 4 mm rope, its links are flat soldered ovals that rotate rather than bend, and a broken link is a one-link repair. A rope of the same width has more sparkle and less metal.
